How many golf clubs are in a 3-SW set of irons?

When browsing over 1,000 sets of irons from different brands, with different names, released in different years, all in different conditions, and with different prices, it can be pretty confusing to know where you stand and what our sets of new or used irons include.

Number to Pitching Wedge

The most common variation will be a specific numbered iron through to a pitching wedge with the standard set up being 4-iron to pitching wedge, a total of seven clubs - 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-irons, and a pitching wedge.

There will be some instances where the set also includes a 3-iron so would consist of eight clubs in total - 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-irons, and a pitching wedge.

There will also be instances of a set starting at a 5-iron (good for golfers who prefer to carry a couple of hybrids) so only including six irons in that particular set - 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-irons, and a pitching wedge.

Regardless of the number of irons, the clubs will follow on from each other in terms of the loft. The gap will usually be between 4 and 5-degrees between each club.

Number to Sand Wedge

Another variant you may come across on the site is a specific number iron through to a sand wedge with the most common set consistent of 7 clubs starting at a 5-iron and seven clubs in total - 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge.

These sets can start as high as a 3-irons and include nine clubs (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-irons, pitching wedge and sand wedge) or low as a 7-iron and only include five clubs - 7, 8, 9-iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge.

The lofts will be consistent (about 4 degrees) between the numbered irons and the pitching wedge. This changes when it comes to the sand wedge. The gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge will be closer to 8 or even 10-degrees. You can add a wedge to fill this gap, but iron sets never include these.

Number to number

The final option is a set of irons with no wedges. These sets will be a run of clubs through to a 9-iron. A six piece set, for example, would include a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-iron. There will be no wedges included in this set so please see our wedges pages to complete your club line up.
