Ping cracked the code for outstanding forgiveness with maximum distance in their drivers years ago. Since then, each release has been a further refinement on this winning formula. What started with the Anser in 2012 has evolved into the brand new G430 Max 10K for the 2024 season.

So, if this theory is correct, there must be some incredible value on the Ping driver shelves at Golfbidder HQ? We look at some of the best options available to upgrade your current driver to a Ping driver for under £200.

Best driver for beginners, Ping G Series driver

The Ping G Series driver is beautiful in its simplicity. Like a few other drivers of its time (TaylorMade M2 being the prime example) it is set up as the engineers want you to set it up. Allowing you to get maximum enjoyment from the very first tee shot!

Despite is striped back aesthetic, the G Series is still packed with technology. The now infamous Turbulators on the crown help increase clubhead speed for the same effort while the T9S face produces more ball speed. There’s the ability to change loft in the hosel but that’s it for adjustability! A big, visible weight on the sole helps demonstrate this is set up for maximum forgiveness and effortless launch.

When all of this combines the G Series (at launch) was Ping’s longest and most forgiving driver, ever!

When testing the Ping G Series driver I was instantly greeted with the busy crown. I know they’re there for a reason (more speed) but as someone who does not need more speed (luck, I know!) they are more a distraction. If you can, literally, look beyond the Turbulators then the G Series delivers on its promise of more forgiveness and more distance.

Best for value, Ping Anser driver

When talking about the Ping Anser driver, it is very much of a case of “If you know, you know”. There is a lot to talk about with this driver. It was the driver that changed it all for Ping and as a result it is astonishing value with clubs available for less than half our budget.

The name itself is immediately Ping and like the original putter being the answer for putting woes, this driver, (inadvertently or not) what the answer to Pings driver problems. Not that they didn’t make great drivers before – the G5 is still one of the best-selling golf clubs in the history of Golfbidder.

But there was something different about this driver. Firstly, it didn’t fit with Ping naming convention of the time – G or i. This should have been the first clue that this driver was different. But you don’t realise how much of an impact this driver had until you know.

Look at all the Ping drivers that came after the Anser and you’ll see that at no point has the product been revolutionised. Over 10 years of driver technology and they Anser still looks as relevant today as it did more than a decade ago. Do the same with TaylorMade or Callaway and the differences are vast! It’s a huge compliment to pay Ping. While other brands are reinventing driver, after, driver, they trust their process with the product doing the talking.

This Anser is almost the perfect driver. Clean aesthetics from above, but plenty of appeal from underneath. Visible tech at the rear so you know the help is there when you need it. Minimal faffing with only hosel adjustability (although I love a weight track!). And performance. The Anser would give any 2024 driver a run for its money – especially for 20% of the price!

Reasons to buy the Ping Anser driver:

  • Perfect balance of performance and value
  • Admire the clean aesthetic
  • Like to tell a story

Best for better players, Ping G410 LST driver

Jumping from beginners to the other end of the spectrum with the best Ping driver for better players – the G410 LST. And its those last three letters, “LST”, that make this a driver for experienced golfers or great drivers of the golf ball.

What is a LST driver? One that is geared up for lower spin. In the case of the G410 LST this is as a result of the CG being slightly forward of centre, lowering the RPM between 200-400 for a flatter, and more penetrating trajectory. As a consequence of this though, the driver become less forgiving, meaning any shot not out the centre of the face is going to be punished more than with the standard or even SFT models.

So, what you gain with lower spin and more distance, you lose in terms of forgiveness, hence why this driver is aimed at the better play who strikes the middle of the club face.

Forgiveness though is improved from the previous LST model thank to Dragon-Fly technology in the crown. This allows the engineers to make the crown even thinner helping the designers move weight to the extremes and increase MOI by 3%. You also get Pings Turbulators and T9S face for fast clubhead speed and even faster balls speeds.

As a better player who wants to eliminate on side of the golf course the sliding weight is great. You can also shift the CG location to where you know you need it. The profile also suits my eye, the G410 is slightly deeper top to bottom. However, the Turbulators are a distraction for me. For other they’ll frame the ball perfectly and e a great help. They just disrupt the clean cosmetic (you read) better players prefer.

Reasons to buy the Ping G410 LST driver:

  • Delivers on the more distance promise for consistent strikers
  • You like to see a specific ball flight on your drives
  • Helps frame the ball at address

Best for slicers, Ping G30 SF TEC driver

Completing the set of head designs Ping typically has when it releases a new driver is the G30 SF TEC, standing for “Straight Flight Technology”. This is a driver for golfers whose tee shots typically end up to the right of the target (for a right-handed golfer).

The science is that with more weight concentrated to the heel of the golf club and a light swing weight help the club face square quicker at impact and steer shot back to the middle of the fairway. This weight is clearly visible when looking at the sole of the club. It is pulled towards the heel and as far back as it can go making this not only a slice corrector, but also a highly forgiving driver that is super easy to launch.

Again, as with Ping successful driver design you also get Turbulators on the crown for increased clubhead speed, a super strong T9S face for fast ball speeds, and a 2-degree loft sleeve for fine tuning launch conditions.

After testing even I was sold. Granted I’m not the best driver of the golf ball but the G30 SF Tec made the game easier and I suspect this would be the case for almost every golfer who tries it. Easy to launch, fast, and consistent. What’s not to like. Oh and also MILES under budget!

The whole golf clubs, from the ground up, is designed with ladies in mind. The head and shaft are lighter to help generate maximum clubhead speed but the clubs still benefit from Ping’s main driver technologies.

You still get Turbulators, and a T9S face for faster and longer drivers. The crown still features Dragon Fly technology which means it can be thinner allowing more mass to be moved lower to make the driver more forgiving and easier to launch.
