TaylorMade is no longer just a driver or metal wood company. After massive success with new products recently (P790 irons, Spider X putters, and TP5 golf balls), they're a major force in all categories.
When looking at irons specifically, the breakthrough came when they launched the P-Series. The original line up included the P750, P770, and P790 and was a premium range aimed at the better player - a market TaylorMade irons had never really appealed. For TaylorMade, it was driver, driver, driver - but that's all changed now.
The P-Series is a straightforward story to follow - the lower the number the shorted the blade length and better the player. The P750 and P770 were players irons with a small cavity for forgiveness and a favourite in the bag of John Rahm. However, it was the P790 irons where TaylorMade struck gold. The P790 is a players irons with the forgiveness and distance of a game improvement iron.
The P790's hollow cavity uses SpeedFoam Technology to generate ball speed as well as optimising sound and feel. SpeedFoam provides the face support and sound-damping properties that make the performance of the P790, unlike any other iron in the TaylorMade family. The P790 was so successful that in an uncharacteristic move, TaylorMade has not re-invented it, instead tweaked it to deliver marginal gains for the 2019 version.
There are two other irons in the P-Series, the P730, and P7TW - both Tour level blades with the P730s in the bags of some of the best players in the world including Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy. As the name suggests, the P7TW irons were made with heavy involvement from Tiger Woods and helped him to his 15th Major (The Masters, 2019) as well as an 82nd PGA Tour Victory at the Zozo Championship.
There are also second-hand TaylorMade iron sets for the game improver with their iron offering. For each driver model, they release an accompanying set of irons. These irons follow the same game improvement footprint, which has been largely unchanged for years - wide sole, low weight, high launch, and strong lofts. Everything in these clubs is geared towards making the game easier and more enjoyable.
Now and then though there is a product that breaks the mould and when looking at TaylorMade irons it's the Speedbladez irons. These irons featured a huge speed pocket (technology still found in current releases) to give more flex on a larger area of the face. It is viewed as a break through not unlike the RocketBallz fairway which featured the same technology a year or two earlier.
Finally TaylorMade caters specifically for lady golfers with their Kalea range. Specifically for slower swing speeds and gapping the Kalea irons have larger loft gaps to give lady golfers a set of irons to cover a wider distance compared to a raditional set.
