I was looking to upgrade my Big Bertha 06 Irons, though still wanting to maintain a hybrid element replacement of the 3,4,5 irons which I'd already made. After looking at various sets, it was a choice between the Nike Sumo2 and the Cleveland HB3. The drawback of the HB3's were that the hybrid design was continued all the way through the set and most criticism of the clubs was directed at the short-irons 8 to PW being hybrids, which is 'game improvement' taken a step too far. So it was I chose the Nike set.
I ordered them on Monday, they arrived the next day, and I used them for the first time yesterday at The Shire London. I though this would be a good course to use them for the first time due to the course having six par3's, six par 4's and six par 5's and four different tees on each hole. This gave me a great opportunity to use all the clubs in the bag...and I was not disappointed. The 4, 5, 6 and 7 hybrid's are quite a bit heavier than other hybrids i've used, and you really feel the weight down at the head of the club, thoug they are perfectly balanced. In fact, the increased weight is not such a bad thing as it helps slow your swing down by about 5mph and, as a result, enables for a smoother swing. The action off the hybrid's clubface is superb. I've never hit more consistent long, straight and high trajectory shots before. Even when you don't crush it out the middle of the face, the ball flight and direction is the same, though with any shot you dont hit true you lose a bit of distance. But to hit a shot a liitle off the toe or heel and still have it go straight with good ball flight is great. The 8 to PW also give the same results. The most noticeable thing of all for me, was that I was having to hit a club shorter with these Nike Sumo's compared to my Callaways. As an example, I'm now hitting 8 iron for 150-155yd instead of my usual 7 iron. I'm hitting wedge 115-120 instead of normally using 9 iron. This is the same all through the set. So, not only am i now getting better distance, I'm now getting consistent straight ball flight. If you can get over the little obstacles of the hybrids being slightly heavier than you're used to, and using a hybrid down to a 7 iron, than you are going to love this set.
