J.B. Holmes

J.B. Holmes

Residence: Campbellsville, Kentucky

DOB: 26/04/1982

John (J.B.) Holmes attended the University of Kentucky and represented the US in the 2005 Walker Cup before turning professional the same year having won the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. J.B. for 10th in his first PGA Tour start at the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii and in February won the FBR Open, making him the fastest golfer to reach $1m in career earnings on the PGA Tour. JB is known for hitting the ball long distances (at 310 yards he is ranked 3rd in overall driving distance on the PGA Tour) however with only 52.4% accuracy (195th on Tour), below the Tour average for greens in regulation and sitting in 32nd on the money list, length may not always be the answer. J.B. Plays courses by routinely hitting his driver as far as he can, bringing back memories of John Daly's "Grip it and Rip It" philosophy. This tends to leave him with only a wedge or short iron to the green - preferring a short iron from an array of lies than a longer iron from the fairway. 2008 was a good year for J.B. In February he secured his second PGA Tour victory at the FBR Open. This was a little more hard fought than when he won it in 2006 by a seven stroke margin. This time he had to beat world #2 Phil Mickelson in a play-off. He did so with a birdie at the first extra hole.

J.B. Holmes Tournament History

2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational

26-29 March 2009 - Bay Hill Country Club and Lodge - This week marked the return of the Tiger Woods we all know and love. After 9 months out of action after re-constructive knew surgery - a birdie putt at the 72nd hole saw Tiger win as Bay Hill for a sixth time. Those familiar back-nine heroics and a putt that everyone knew he was going to drain saw the world number 1 come from 5 strokes back on the final day - equalling his career best comeback. This remarkable comeback must have been great to watch apart from the eyes of Sean O’Hair who Woods beat into second place.

In J.B. Holmes's bag...J.B featured in all the rounds this week but did not really set the course alight. The highlight came in the second round when he broke par for the only time this week with a 1-under 69. This is a tricky photo for identifying J.B’s clubs. His driver is a Cobra L5V and his fairways are the new Cobra S9-1’s. His irons are a little more easily identifiable - they are the Cobra Pro CB irons. His putter is a Scotty Cameron Kombi - and by the distance it’s sticking out of the bag, it’s the mid-length model.

2007 PODS Championship

8-11 March - PODS Championship - Westin Innisbrook - Copperhead Course. Won by 1998 Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia with a 10 under par score of 274. This was Calcavecchia’s first Tour victory since the 2005 Bell Canadian – and his 13th win in total. The $954,000 first prize takes him over the $20m career earnings for his career. He finished at 10-under 274 – and had a bit of a let-off when Heath Slocum missed a 4-foot par putt on the final hole which would have taken him into the play-off.
