John Daly

Residence: Rogers, Arkansas

DOB: 28/04/1966

Blimey, where do you start when writing about ‘Long John’ Daly? You could write a book about him – but no need because he’s written one himself - My Life In and Out of the Rough – a cracking read which (any kids reading this, please turn away now) mostly details how much alcohol he drinks, how many wives he’s had, and how much money he’s lost gambling (apparently over $50m in 15 years). John also hates flying so has a $1m Motorhome to get from one event to another. Daly attended the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the golf team and joined the PGA Tour in 1991 – a year in which he made history in his extraordinary ‘Zero to Hero’ victory in the USPGA. He was 9th on the reserve list for the tournament, he got a last minute call-up when Nick Price pulled out, drove through the night to make it to the course, didn’t have time for a practice round – and went on to win by three strokes – becoming the first Tour rookie to win a major title since 1976. In 1995, he won his second Major at St Andrews in a play-off against Costantino Rocca. One of the biggest hitters in the world, his lifetime average for distance off the tee is 309.4 yards. He also has a great short game. John also does a lot of charity work. Refused to take part in the Open Champions Dinner because according to him "You don't get a guy this big into a suit.” Doesn’t frequent the gym because, strangely, they ‘won’t let me smoke’.

John Daly Club History

Below is a selection of clubs used by John Daly throughout his career

John Daly Tournament History

2008 Australian Masters

27-30 November 2008 - Sportsbet Australian Masters - Huntingdale GC. Rod Pampling won the Sportsbet Australian Masters after edging out Marcus Fraser at the third play-off hole. The two Australians finished locked at the top of the final round leader board on 12 under par. Fraser carded a brilliant final round seven under par 65, which included just one bogey, while Pampling signed for a fourth round 65 despite having birdie chances at closing 3 holes of his round which would have sealed the win. A the 3rd play-off hole, Pampling put the pressure on his opponent after getting to within a foot, but Fraser secured the win after converting from ten feet.

In John Daly's bag...Rounds of 73 and 76 saw John miss the cut.

John Daily is probably the answer that most people give when asked who the longest driver on Tour is. He achieved this staggering distance this week by carrying a Taylor Made Burner TP. He complimented this with a Taylor Made V Steel fairway and a Taylor Made Rescue TP. He carried Titleist Vokey Design wedges and a McGregor Bobby Grace putter. A real mixed bag...just like the player using them!

2007 Arnold Palmer Invitational

15-18 March - Arnold Palmer Invitational - Bay Hill Clubs and Lodge. After three runners-up spots at Bay Hill, Vijay Singh finally put the doubts to rest by banking the $990,000 first prize – and logging the 31st win of his career – in doing so equalling Harry Copper’s record for the most number of PGA Tour victories by a foreign-born player. For those amongst us of a certain age, we can take comfort from the fact that Vijay has won an astonishing 19 of those victories since turning 40. There is hope for us yet!

In John Daly's bag...We're not quite sure which model these Maxfli irons are. Adidas own Maxfli and TaylorMade - and we know that to some extent Maxfli are building their brand around Big John. We do know he normally uses TaylorMade drivers and according to his own website, what lurks underneath the lion headcover is the new TaylorMade Burner driver. More photos coming soon....
