Robert-Jan Derksen

Robert-Jan Derksen

Residence: Blaricum, The Netherlands

DOB: 03/01/1974

Robert took up golf at age 14 after a new course was constructed close to his home in Nijmegen. An impressive amateur career saw him win both the Dutch Match Play and Stroke Play titles before he turned professional in 1996. He has notched two victories on The European Tour, his most recent being the 2005 Madeira Island Open Caixa Geral de Depositos, while his most impressive came in 2003 when he held off the challenge of Ernie Els to win the Dubai Desert Classic. Robert came close to winning a third title when he finished second in the 2008 BMW Asian Open after a final round 73 took him out of the running. Away from the course, Robert is committed to the development of golf at a youth level and founded his own youth team in 2005 called Golfjuniors, consisting of three top Dutch amateurs around the age of 16. He was inspired to take this action by former Open Champion Paul Lawrie after hearing of the Scots support of junior golf. The juniors also benefit from the expertise of his coaches including putting guru Harold Swash and psychologist Alan Fine. Away from the golf course, one of his many interests is abstract painting.

2008 Portugal Masters

16-19 October - Portugal Masters - Oceânico Victoria Golf Course. Spain’s Alvaro Quiros was victorious at the Portugal Masters after holding off a determined challenge from Europe’s form player, Robert Karlsson. The 25 year old from Cadiz pocketed the €500,000 winner’s cheque - the largest of his career - after a final round 68 (a 19 under par total); he immediately dedicated his win to Seve Ballesteros, who was recovering in hospital from an operation to remove a brain tumour at the time. European Order of Merit leader Karlsson, who had begun the final round only a shot behind the Spaniard, had to settle for a share of third place after carding a 71.

In Robert-Jan Derksen's bag...A closing round of 73 spoilt what was shaping up to be a good week for the Dutchman. He was lying 5-strokes back going into the final round but sadly only drifted further away on Sunday, finishing the week in a tie for 16th. This is the first time that our photographer has snapped the big Dutchman. Is website tells us that he is sponsored by Taylor Made but all we can identify is that it is only his irons (Taylor Made rac MB TP) and fairway (Taylor Made Burner Tour Launch) that come from the manufacturer.
