Chris Wood

Chris Wood

Residence: Bristol, England

DOB: 20/11/1987

Chris turned professional after The Open and played in seven European Tour events, with his best performance coming at the Portugal Masters where he finished tenth. Was a keen footballer with aspirations to play for Bristol City Football Club before a serious knee injury saw him devote his time to golf. Chris capped a stunning 2008 season by claiming fifth place at The European Tour Qualifying School – Final Stage to earn his playing privileges for this season. That achievement was one of two distinct golfing highlights last year, the other, of course, coming at The 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale when the then amateur player announced his arrival to golf’s grandest stage by beating the majority of the world’s best players to take a share of fifth place behind Padraig Harrington. Chris’ rookie season has got off to a great start with a tied for 6th place in only his second event on Tour this year - the South African Open. Certainly one to keep an eye on!

2008 Portugal Masters

16-19 October - Portugal Masters - Oceânico Victoria Golf Course. Spain’s Alvaro Quiros was victorious at the Portugal Masters after holding off a determined challenge from Europe’s form player, Robert Karlsson. The 25 year old from Cadiz pocketed the €500,000 winner’s cheque - the largest of his career - after a final round 68 (a 19 under par total); he immediately dedicated his win to Seve Ballesteros, who was recovering in hospital from an operation to remove a brain tumour at the time. European Order of Merit leader Karlsson, who had begun the final round only a shot behind the Spaniard, had to settle for a share of third place after carding a 71.

In Chris Wood's bag...The rookie from Bristol continues to shine in his debut year on the European Tour. Another top-10 finish this week after rounds of 73, 70, 68 and a magnificent 65 in the closing round secured him a tie for 10th place at the close. The youngster from Bristol appears to have secured himself a Titleist equipment contract for his first full season on the European Tour. He started with the new Titleist 909 but we could not confirm the model that he was using - probably the DComp. His fairway woods were the Titleist 909 F3. Chris was using a combination of irons at the Portugal Masters. His longer irons were the Titleist 735.CM and the rest were made up of the Titleist ZM Forged. Like many pros he was using Titleist Vokey wedges and a Scotty Cameron - but sadly from our photos and internet sources could not pinpoint the model used.
