Robert Karlsson
Residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco
DOB: 09/03/1969
Robert Karlsson is probably the best golfer to come out of Sweden. He was born in Katrineholm, Sweden and was introduced to the game by his father who was a green keeper. After a successful amateur career he turned professional in 1989 and qualified for membership of the European Tour at the 1990 Qualifying School.
Robert has won 9 events on the European Tour - including the BMW International (1997), Belgacom Open (1999), Spanish Open (2001) and Omega European Masters (2002). His best year prior to 2008 was the 2006 season when he won the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor and the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe. These wins helped him to finish the year 4th in the European Order of Merit - and also secured him a place alongside fellow Swede Henrik Stenson in Woosie’s Ryder Cup team at the K Club.
At the 2006 Celtic Manor Wales Open, Karlsson broke the European Tour's 36 hole and 54 hole scoring records by shooting 124 for the first two rounds and 189 for the first 3. However as the course was a par 69, which is rare at the top level, his ‘to-par’ scores were a much less remarkable 14 under after two rounds and 18 under after three.
Karlsson is one of the tallest golfers on the European Tour at 6ft 5in. Like many leading Swedish golfers he lives outside his home country, basing himself in the tax haven of Monaco.
Robert ensured his place in the annals of European Tour history when he became the first Swedish player to win The Order of Merit in 2008. The 39 year old entered the season-ending Volvo Masters with a commanding lead thanks to a supremely consistent season which saw him win the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as well as notch ten other top ten finishes including the Masters Tournament, the US Open Championship and The Open Championship.

Robert Karlsson Tournament History
2008 Wales Open |
29 May - 1 June - The Welsh Open - Celtic Manor. Scott Strange completed an emphatic wire-to-wire victory at The Celtic Manor Wales Open with a sensational final round 64. Strange’s winning total of 262 was 22 under par and 4 shots better than the next best golfer, Robert Karlsson who was champion in 2006. The Australian becomes the third player to make The Celtic Manor Wales Open his maiden victory on The European Tour following in the footsteps of Steen Tinning (2000) and Simon Khan (2004). Karlsson did close to within a shot at one time with a spectacular run of 6 successive birdies around the turn. Strange was ignoring the leader boards dotted around the Twenty Ten course and seemed oblivious to the cheers ringing out from the group in front as he promptly pulled away. |
In Robert Karlsson's bag...Robert Karlsson finished in second place on his was to his first European Tour Order of merit. A final round 64 was not quite enough to close the gap to wire-to-wire leader Scott Strange. Robert Karlsson is Europe's #1 golfer in 2008 and here is your chance to see the clubs that he used to secure this crown up close and personal. Primarily a Titleist professional Robert used the Titleist 907 D2 9.5˚ from the tee which has helped him to average over 290 yards in 2008. Roberts also used Titleist performance iron the Z Muscle Forged (4-P) and completed his set with a range of Vokey 200 Series wedges (49˚, 55˚ and 60˚). He is also currently testing a Scotty Cameron prototype putter.

2008 Irish Open |
24-27 January - Buick Invitational - Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods joined elite company on the final day of the Buick Invitational, even though he might as well have been playing alone. He thrilled the 4-deep gallery with an improbable flop shot from the trampled grass behind the 9th green to save par. He sent Torrey Pines into delirium with a 60-foot birdie putt that started in one direction and slid into the cup from the other. He made 3 straight bogeys on the back 9, a rarity for him when he's in the lead. And none of it mattered. The outcome was never in doubt at the Buick Invitational, only the final score. A 10-foot birdie on the 18th gave Woods a 1-under 71 and an 8-shot victory, the ninth time in his career that he has won by at least that many. |
In Robert Karlsson's bag...In Roberts bag at the Irish Open - where he tied 3rd - Titleist 907 D2 driver, Titleist ZM Forged irons, 906 F2 fairway woods, and Vokey Spin Milled wedges. He uses the Titleist Pro V1x ball.

2007 BMW PGA Championship |
24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth. The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002. |
In Robert Karlsson's bag...In Karlsson's bag at the BMW - Titleist 695.MB irons, Titleist 907 D2 driver, Titleist 906 F2 fairway wood. He also uses various Titleist Vokey wedges - and his initials can be seen stamped on his 250.08 gap wedge.
