Residence: Zurich, Switzerland
DOB: 18/12/1979
Finland’s Mikko Ilonen first hit the headlines in 2000 when he won the Amateur Championship – turning professional the following year when he finished a superb 9th at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s after a 66 which was the low round of the final day. He won his first professional tournament in February 2007 at the Indonesia Open in Jakarta – and in bagging the 134,000 first prize, became the first golfer from Finland to win a European Tour event.

 2008  Irish Open

Played at the magnificent Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort from 15th - 18th May 2008, the championship was memorable not only because Richard Finch's victory, but by his falling into the River Maigue after hitting his third shot on th 18th. His second shot ended up on the fringe of the riverbank but he still decided to go for the green. The might swipe he gave it knocked him off balance, and into the drink he went, much to the amusement of the surrounding specators. His caddie hauled him from the water and, dripping wet, he made his way to the green and took three putts which was enough to bank the 416,000 Euro first prize.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

Between 24th and 27th May 2007, the BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
