Paul Casey

Residence: Weybridge, England and Scottsdale, Arizona
DOB: 21/07/1977
Paul Casey is one of Europe’s finest golfers. As a boy, he lived in Weybridge and attended Hampton School - just down the road from us here at Golfbidder – from where he went on to golf scholarship at Arizona State University. He had a great amateur career, winning back-to back English Amateurs in 1999 and 2000 – and was also a member of GB & I’s winning 1999 Walker Cup team. Had a fantastic 2006 – winning the Volvo Open, Johnnie Walker at Gleneagles, and most notably, the HSBC World Match Play at Wentworth where he beat Shaun Micheel 10 & 8 in the final for a record winning margin – and picked up a whopping 600,000 euros for his efforts. These victories saw him lead the European Tour Order of Merit until the final event when Padraig Harrington pipped him at the post at the Volvo Masters in Valderrama . Had a great Ryder Cup at the K Club under Woosie, winning 3 points from 4 matches (2 wins, 2 halves) and beating Jim Furyk in the singles. As of writing (May 2007) he lies 4th on the European Tour helped by his first – and probably not last – win of the year - at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in January. Our bio photo of Paul was taken at the WGC Doral in March 2007.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

Between 24th and 27th May 2007, the BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.

 2007  TPC - Sawgrass

The 34th staging of the TPC took place at The Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida between May 10th-13th 2007. The Players Championship (TPC) has for a long time been considered golf’s ‘5th’ Major because of the traditionally very strong field – typically the top 50 players in the world congregate to battle it out for the huge prize money. The victor this time was Phil Mickelson who, helped by Tiger’s old coach, Butch Harmon, bagged the $1.62m first prize and the 31st PGA Tour victory of his career after finishing with a 3-under 69 and a two-stroke victory over Sergio Garcia. Stewart Cink and Jose Maria Olazabal a further stroke back tied 3rd. The Stadium course is famous for it’s tiny island green on the par 3 17th – which this time proved a watery grave for a record 94 golf balls (it’s not just us handicappers who end up in the drink). This was Mickelson’s first victory at the TPC after 14 attempts.
