Paul Casey
Residence: Weybridge, England and Scottsdale, Arizona
DOB: 21/07/1977
Paul Casey is one of Europe’s finest golfers. As a boy, he lived in Weybridge and attended Hampton School - just down the road from us here at Golfbidder - from where he went on to golf scholarship at Arizona State University.
He had a great amateur career, winning back-to back English Amateurs in 1999 and 2000 - and was a member of GB & I’s winning 1999 Walker Cup team, where he was only the third player in 77 years to record 4 victories without a single defeat. In the US he was the 1st player to win 3 consecutive Pac-10 Championships (1998, 1999 and 2000) breaking the championship scoring record held by Tiger Woods (-18) with a -23 265 in his 2000 success.
Casey joined the European Tour in May 2001 and recorded a 2nd place in his 5th event and a first win in his 11th, the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship, ending that season 22nd on the European Tour Order of Merit collecting the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in the process. He is yet to miss a cut in a European Tour event since joining the Tour securing 8 wins in the process. He now splits his time between the European Tour and PGA Tour in America but is yet to secure a debut win on the LPGA Tour.
Paul had a fantastic 2006 - winning the Volvo Open, Johnnie Walker at Gleneagles, and most notably, the HSBC World Match Play at Wentworth where he beat Shaun Micheel 10 & 8 in the final for a record winning margin - and picked up a whopping 600,000 Euros for his efforts. These victories saw him lead the European Tour Order of Merit until the final event, when Padraig Harrington piped him at the post. He also helped the 2006 Ryder Cup Team to victory under ‘Woosie’, winning 3 points from 4 matches (2 wins, 2 halves) and beating Jim Furyk in the singles at the K Club in 2006.
Although without a win in 2008 Paul has still seen success come from his golfing ability. He has secured 8 top-10 finished in 14 events and sits 20th on the European Tour Order of Merit. On the LPGA Tour he has seen similar levels of success with 4 top-10 finishes from 18 starts. These excellent finishes have been followed by a series of issued cuts on more than one occasion. It seems that Paul is yet to fins the consistency he enjoys on the European Tour when he plays in America and the big stage of the Majors.

Paul Casey Tournament History
2008 World Golf Championship - CA Championship |
13-16 March - Arnold Palmer Invitational - Bay Hill Club and Lodge. In typical Tiger fashion, the world #1 sank a 24-foot putt on the 72nd hole at Bay Hill for his fifth consecutive win, much to the annoyance of Bart Bryant who was looking for his first win since 2005. This was his biggest challenge since this streak began 7 months ago, Woods outlasted 45-year-old Bart Bryant and won with a birdie putt on the 72nd hole for the first time in 7 years. He turned and slammed his cap to the ground, letting out a roar to celebrate his 64th career victory, tying Ben Hogan at #3 on the PGA Tour career list. |
In Paul Casey's bag...The highlight of Paul’s week was a 67 in the 3rd round. This was surrounded by over par rounds in the mid 70’s that led to Paul to finish in a tie for 51st place. What is obvious from our photo is that Paul is a member of the Nike Golf stable. From the limited club on show we can tell that Paul’s driver this week was a Nike SQ Sumo 5000. As well as this we can identify that he was carrying a set of Nike Forged Blade irons.

2007 BMW PGA Championship |
24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth. The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002. |

2007 The Players Championship |
10-13 May - The Players Championship - TPC at Sawgrass - Stadium Course. The Players Championship (TPC) has for a long time been considered golf’s ‘5th’ Major because of the traditionally very strong field – typically the top 50 players in the world congregate to battle it out for the huge prize money. The victor this time was Phil Mickelson who, helped by Tiger’s old coach, Butch Harmon, bagged the $1.62m first prize and the 31st PGA Tour victory of his career after finishing with a 3-under 69 and a two-stroke victory over Sergio Garcia. Stewart Cink and Jose Maria Olazabal a further stroke back tied 3rd. The Stadium course is famous for its tiny island green on the par 3 17th – which this time proved a watery grave for a record 94 golf balls (it’s not just us handicappers who end up in the drink). This was Mickelson’s first victory at the TPC after 14 attempts. |
