Thomas Levet
Residence: Florida, USA
DOB: 05/09/1968
Thomas is the son of a Parisian doctor and born into a true sporting family. His father was a first class hockey and tennis player, his mother played First Division volleyball in France and his grandfather was a professional cyclist.
Thomas turned professional in 1988 off a handicap of +2 and earned his first European Tour card through ‘Q-School’ that year. His first victory did not come for another ten years though when he won the Cannes Open in 1998. A third round of 65 left him with some margin for error going into the final day when a 73 was enough to secure him his first European Tour win - and become the first home-soil winner in 40 years.
In between turning professional and claiming his first win Thomas became first Frenchman to play on US PGA Tour in 1994.
In 2002, came agonisingly close to becoming the first Frenchman to win The Open Championship since Arnaud Massy in 1907. Shot 66 in the final round at Muirfield to tie with Stuart Appleby, Steve Elkington and Ernie Els. After again equalling with Els in the initial four hole play-off, he lost to the South African in sudden-death.
He has found the winning touch in the last few years. In 2008 he won the MAPFRE Open de Andalucia and then in 2009 he won the Open de Espana after an opening 64 gave him the perfect foundation to go on to victory.
2009 is his best campaign on the European Tour since he finished 5th in 2004. He will be looking to push for a Ryder Cup berth after making his debut in 2004.
