Ross Fisher

Ross Fisher

Residence: Cheam, England

DOB: 22/11/1980

Ross learnt his trade at the European Tour Headquarters at The Wentworth Club after being introduced to the game by his step-father at the age of three. Fisher joined the European Tour in 2006 and flew out of the blocks in his rookie season with a joint 4th finish in the Volvo China Open, his first event of the 2006 season. He graduated to The European Tour after finishing in 18th on the Challenge Tour's money list in 2005 and then improving his ranking at the Final Stage of Qualifying School. During his rookie year he also won a Jaguar for a nearest to the pin contest at the 2006 Quinn Direct British Masters. In 2007 he won his maiden European Tour victory at the KLM Open by a single stroke over local hero Joost Luiten and subsequently finished the year ranked 43rd on the European Tour Order of Merit. Ross came close to a 2nd European Tour victory at the start of the 2008 campaign but lost out to Phil Mickelson in a play-off for the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. He however banished that disappointment with a landslide 7 stroke victory over his closest challenger, Sergio Garcia, at The European Open at The London Golf Club. Despite never played the course either in competition or in practice, Fisher shot a first round 63 - the lowest round of his professional career - which featured a wind-assisted 413 yard drive on the 9th hole. Having established a 1st round lead, he was never overtaken at the top of the leader board, only increasing his lead going on to win the tournament by a comfortable 7shots. Ross is certainly coming of age on the European Tour and giving himself plenty of opportunities for victory, coming close in the 2008 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship only to be denied by Robert Karlsson in a sudden-death play-off.

2008 The Open Championship

17-20 July - The Open Championship - Royal Birkdale. The 137th Open Championship was successfully defended by Padraig Harrington. He shot -4 on the back 9 on the Sunday to pull away from Ian Poulter and overnight leader Greg Norman. The Open this year was without one notable absentee as World #1 Tiger Woods was recovering from knee surgery. Greg Norman became the oldest golfer ever to hold at least a share of the 54-hole lead when he led by 2 strokes on +2. Due to extremely high winds, no one managed to play under par for the round, and it was first time since 1986 when the 54-hole leader was not under par. Despite a wrist injury that almost forced him to withdraw prior to the tournament Harrington pulled away from the field with a tremendous back 9 and became only the fifth golfer to retain the Open Championship in the last 50 years.

In Ross Fisher's bag...After 3 quality opening rounds saw Ross go into the final round in 5th place. A final round 79 however saw him plummet into the pack, finishing in a tie for 39th place. Ross Fisher is one of a growing number of young European Tour pro's making a name for themselves on each side of the Atlantic. We can see here that he is a Titleist man through and through as his entire set built up of their equipment. He drove off with a Titleist 905 R driver (9.5˚). He chose not to use a hybrid and instead has a Titleist 695 MB 3-iron through to pitching wedge. Cutting his irons short at #9 Ross carried 3 specialist wedges. The Titleist Vokey 200 Series in 48˚ and 54˚ and a Titleist Vokey Spin Milled 2007 60˚. He completed his set with a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 putter.
