By beating Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk into second spots at the US Open at Oakmont (June 2007), Angel (pronounced Ankle) Cabrera has become only the second Argentinian to win a Major – the first was Roberto de Vicenzo, who won the Open Championship at Hoylake in 1967. The win will catapult the amiable Cabrera to superstar status – and the $1.26m first prize cheque will be small beer to what will be coming his way in terms of increased sponsorship deals. Angel’s recipe for success couldn’t be more different from the aspiring tour player’s inclination to surround themselves with a team of coaches, psychologists and trainers. The 37-year old has never been to a gym. On being questioned about his win he explained: ‘Some golfers have psychologists - but I smoke." He came from a very modest background, and like many tour players, started out as a caddie at his local club – in this case the Cordoba Club in Argentina. He soon emerged as one of the promising juniors in the region. To date is the only Argentine to make the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings (9th in 2005). Known on tour as ‘El Pato’ (the duck) for his strange way of walking, in 2002 he won the B&H International and in 2005, the BMW Championship at Wentworth – the most prestigious event on the European Tour. His US Open win has pushed him into second place on the European Order of Merit. |

No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row. |
