Residence: Staffordshire, England
Hailing from strong sporting stock - his uncle is Bob Taylor, the former England wicketkeeper – Simon enjoys flying and hopes soon to pass his pilot’s licence. He took up golf at the age of 15 and cut his handicap from 26 to 12 in his first season and by 17 he was off scratch.
Simon turned professional in 1997 and fluttered between the Challenge Tour and European Tour until 2002. He finally broke into the top-100 on the Order of Merit in 2003 but lost his card at the end of the 2004 season. Regained playing rights at the Tour School and celebrated with victory in the Dimension Data Pro-Am at Sun City on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa shortly afterwards.
Simon Wakefield had his best finish on The European Tour in 2006 – finishing 60th on the Order of Merit – helped by 4th places in the Madeira Island Open and the Volvo China Open.
Simon threatened to break through on a number of occasions in 2008, finishing runner up at the Bank Austria Golf Open presented by Telekom Austria. He also challenged at the top of The Open Championship leader board before tying for 19th.

Simon Wakefield Tournament History
2007 BMW PGA Championship
24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth. The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
