The message from Mark Wilson is – never give up! Having spent years struggling to keep his Tour card, at the age of 32 and after 111 starts, he finally won his first PGA tournament at The Honda Classic in March 2007, beating Jose Coceres, Camilo Villegas and Boo Weekley in a four-way play-off. He picked up the $990,000 first prize, which was by far the biggest wind-fall of his career. And this victory came despite calling a two-shot penalty on himself during the second round – so good guys do win.
Marked played on the Hooters Tour from 1998-2001 and won three times. He also played the PGA Tour of Australasia from 2000-02. Mark has two career holes-in-one in competitive rounds, both while playing with fellow professional Doug LaBelle II.
Mark earned his first PGA Tour card via a 17th finish at the 2002 Qualifying Tournament. During his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2003, playing in his 19th career event he finally posted his first top-10, a solo fourth at the HP Classic of New Orleans. However he narrowly missed out on retaining his card this year, finishing 128th on money list, so ended up having to go back to Q-School again.
It seems that Mark has finally found a level of consistency. Back to back top-10 finishes in the final third of the 2008 season help him secure a 55th place finish on the money list - the best of his career to date. The highlight of the season came at the Valero Texas Open where a final round 63 (his best round of the year) catapulted him into a tie for 2nd place.

2007 World Golf Championship - CA Championship |
22-25 March - WGC - CA Championship - Doral Golf Resort and Spa - Blue Monster Course. Tiger Woods bagged another $1.35m for his two-shot win over Ryder Cup team mate Brett Wetterich at the Blue Monster Course at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida between 22nd-25th March 2007. No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row. |
In Mark Wilson's bag...In Mark Wilson's bag at Doral are the same clubs he used just a couple of weeks earlier to bag $990,000 for his first tour victory in the 2007 Honda Classic. Interestingly, he uses the older model Ping i3 Blade irons (4 thru pitching wedge) - matched with Ping Tour wedges (52, 56 and 60 degree). He also uses a Ping G2 Anser B putter. We know from the Ping website that hidden under the covers are a 7.5 degree Ping Rapture driver and an 18 degree Rapture Hybrid utility wood.
