Briny Baird
Residence: Jupiter, Florida
DOB: 11/05/1972
Michael Jancey Baird or "Briny" to his friends and fellow tour professionals was born in Miami Beach, Florida.
Briny took up the game at a young age and by 7th grade was playing varsity golf at the Miami Country Day. He originally attended Georgia Tech before transferring to Valdosta State University where he won the NCAA Division II individual golf championship in 1994 and 1995.
Briny turned professional in 1995 after graduating with a degree in communications. After 3 seasons on the Nationwide Tour Briny finished 12th at the PGA Tour Qualifying School to earn the first PGA Tour card of his career. However he finished 186th on the Money List in his rookie season and had to return to the Nationwide Tour. He returned to the PGA Tour immediately though with a 4th place finish on the Nationwide Tour money list.
In 2003 Briny tied the Tour birdie-eagle streak record during the second round of the Funai Classic. The streak with an eagle on the 15th hole and then birdied the next seven holes for a total of 9-under over eight holes.
Briny has never won a PGA Tour event however he has finished second on four separate occasions, most recently at the 2009 Verizon Heritage.

2009 World Golf Championship - CA Championship |
12-15 March 2009 - Doral Golf and Spa Resort - Phil Mickelson won his first World Golf Championships title on Sunday at the CA Championship, where he held off Nick Watney to take the title by one stroke and his 36th career victory. However this was perhaps not the most news worthy story of the week. During his opening round, Henrik Stenson thought it a good idea to play from out of the water! After stripping down to his boxer shorts the Swede preceded to do just this. And it was down to PGA Tour photographer Kyle Auclair to capture this magical moment. With the world’s best golf photographers trailing Tiger Woods, Kyle decided he was going to follow other players instead. Little did he know this particular sequence of images would be plastered on newspapers, websites and television shows all over the country the next day. |
In Briny Baird's bag...Although a number of players finished above Briny this week - there were a few big names, notably Sergio Garcia, who finished below him. Opening rounds of 70 and 68 gave him a solid platform to secure a top-20 finish in the second WGC event of the year. However a 73 in the final round saw him fall down the field, out of the top-20 and into a tie for 31st. Briny has been using an older TaylorMade driver for a while now. That was until the TaylorMade R9 was launched. Briny thought this club was so good that he decided to switch (and stay switched) for the first time in years. But as we can see from the photo Briny has not yet been temped away from his trusty Callaway Steelhead III fairway wood. Our friends at TaylorMade also informed us that he was using a set of TaylorMade R7 Forged irons this week.
