Retief Goosen

Residence: Pietersburg, South Africa and Ascot, England
DOB: 02/03/1969
Retief Goosen has for a long time been one of the best golfers in the world. Apart from having 30 professional wins to his name, he secured his place among golf’s greats with two US Open victories - in 2001 at Tulsa and in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills. In 2001 Goosen became the first non-European to win the European Order of Merit since Greg Norman in 1982 and repeated the feat in 2002 - becoming the first non-European to retain the crown and was duly elected an Honorary Member of The European Tour. Goosen is known for his extremely calm temperament, a trait which earned him his nickname on the US PGA Tour - ‘The Iceman’- although he is more often simply known as ‘Goose’ (you can buy his ‘goose’ headcover he uses by clicking ‘headcovers’ on the left). At 15 years old Goosen was golfing with his friend Henri at Pietersburg Golf Club. They were playing through a small shower when lightning struck. Goosen’s friend was knocked from his feet but Retief was more severely affected. When Henri stood back up he saw Retief lying on the ground on his back with his shoes disintegrating from around his feet. His underwear and watch band had melted to his skin. Despite this, a few weeks later he had recovered enough to grab another set of clubs and continue playing golf. Goosen doesn't remember the events that happened, but his father takes his son's survival as a sign from God as there being good things to come. Goosen turned professional in 1990, following a win in the South African Amateur Championship he won the European Tour's qualifying school in 1992 and enjoyed success on the European Tour between 1992 and 2000. It wasn’t until 2001 that he made his name in America, winning The U.S. Open on a very tough Southern Hills Country Club course. An incredible birdie, eagle finish allowed him to claim victory in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Qatar in January 2007. Retief was forced to withdraw from the 2008 Qatar Masters as defending champion due to problems with his eye sight after undergoing corrective laser surgery ten days prior to the event. He was forced to return to his home in London for further treatment. After this second wave of treatment, Retief was still struggling to find the form of previous seasons that helped him secure 2 US Open titles, with a tied 2nd at the WGC CA Championship as his best result for the year.

 2008  Arnold Palmer Invitational

13-16 March - Arnold Palmer Invitational - Bay Hill Club and Lodge. In typical Tiger fashion, the world #1 sank a 24-foot putt on the 72nd hole at Bay Hill for his fifth consecutive win, much to the annoyance of Bart Bryant who was looking for his first win since 2005. This was his biggest challenge since this streak began 7 months ago, Woods outlasted 45-year-old Bart Bryant and won with a birdie putt on the 72nd hole for the first time in 7 years. He turned and slammed his cap to the ground, letting out a roar to celebrate his 64th career victory, tying Ben Hogan at #3 on the PGA Tour career list.

A pair of 68’s over the 2 closing rounds saw Retief improve on a steady start. He finished in a tie for 14th place after starting the final round on the edge of the top-25.

This image set has to be one of the best on the Golfbidder website. We can get really up close and personal with the clubs in Retief’s bag. It all began with a Taylor Mader7 SuperQuad driver. This was complimented by a duo of Taylor Made Burner TP fairway woods, one of which is hidden under his trademark ‘Goose’ headcover. His irons were Taylor Made r7 TP and I’m sure you’ll agree look fantastic in the bag. These were complimented by a set of rac TP wedges and a Taylor Made Rossa series putter.

 2007  Wales Open

31 May - 3 June - The Welsh Open - Celtic Manor. Played between 31st May and 3rd June 2007, the 2007 Wales Open took place at Celtic Manor – venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup – and was won by South Africa’s Richard Sterne who holed a five footer on the 18th to take the £250,000 winner’s cheque – and dash Welsh hopes by edging out the big home favourite Bradley Dredge. Dredge was the joint overnight leader, but having run up an amazing five birdies in a row from the ninth, his drive on 18 clipped a fairway bunker from where he had to chip out short. A superb pitch left him with a six-footer to go into the play-off, but tantalisingly, it caught the lip and just stayed above ground.

In Retief's bag at Celtic Manor - TaylorMade Burner TP 9.5 degree driver, under the Goose headcover (which, incidentally, can be bought from golfbidder by clicking 'headcovers' on the left) is a 15 degree Burner Steel fairway wood. The irons are rac Forged TP - and the wedges, 54 and 60 degree TaylorMade rac Black TPs. We think the putter he uses is a Yes C-Groove.
