Colin Montgomerie

Residence: Surrey, England
DOB: 23/06/1963
Oh, Monty, Monty – what are we going to do with you?! One of the greatest golfers we’ve ever produced – 29 European Tour wins, an astonishing 8 Order of Merit titles - and still no Major! Life, indeed, is tough. OK, Monty’s got pots of money but he would probably trade the lot and be living in a cardboard box underneath the arches at Kings Cross for one or two of the Majors that have eluded him; Runner up at the Open in 2005, in the US Open in 1994 and 1997, in the USPGA in 1995. And it doesn’t stop there. In 2006, at another U.S. Open – this time at Winged Foot Golf Club – he holed a 60 foot putt for birdie putt at the 17th, but swiftly followed it with a double bogey 6 at the par-4 18th having ‘fatted’ his second shot from the middle of the fairway to end up short, right and in deep rough. He finished tied for second with Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson – leaving Australian Geoff Ogilvy to win by one. Ouch! Still, Monty’s Ryder Cup record is quite extraordinary; He has played in eight Ryder Cup matches – and has never been defeated in a singles match. In 2004, he had the honour of sinking the putt that ensured Europe bagged an outright victory.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

Between 24th and 27th May 2007, the BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.

At the BWM - where he tied 30th - Monty is still using the same clubs he did at Doral: a Yonex Nanospeed driver, Nanospeed irons, Cyberstar XC Hybrid, T-1 wedges and CP-01 putter.

2007  World Golf Championships - CA – Doral

Tiger Woods bagged another $1.35m for his two-shot win over Ryder Cup team mate Brett Wetterich at the Blue Monster Course at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida between 22nd-25th March 2007. No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row.

Some of Monty's kit is hidden, but we know from Yonex exactly what's in the bag here: A Nanospeed driver, Nanospeed irons (unusually, Monty uses graphite shafts - most tour players use steel), Cyberstar XC Hybrid utility wood, Cyberstar T-1 wedges and a Yonex CP-01 Putter.
