Camilo Villegas
Residence: Gainesville, Florida
DOB: 01/07/1982
Camilo Villegas, known as much for wearing tight trousers and the screaming women who follow him as for his golf, was selected as one of People Magazine's ‘Hottest Bachelors’ in 2006. But actually, he can play golf too - and is one of hottest talents at the moment in world golf and one of the biggest hitters on the US Tour - averaging over 300 yards off the tee in 2006.
Born in Columbia, Camilo took up the game as a child excelled as a junior to earn a scholarship to play collegiate golf at the University of Florida, along with his brother Manny. He was a 3 time All American, and was the South-eastern Conference Player of the Year in 2002 and 2004.
Villegas is also known for his commitment to physical fitness, and in the June 2006 issue of Golf Digest he was named "the most ripped player on tour, Tiger Woods included". He joined the Tour in 2006 and had a great start with several top-5 finishes. He also has a very odd putting routine which involves crouching on the green with his left leg extended to get a better view of the line? This strange posture has resulted within him being given the nickname ‘Hombre Araña’ - or Spiderman.
Villegas won his first PGA Tour title in September 2008, winning the BMW Championship by 2 shots over Dudley Hart. For the last 44 holes of the tournament, Villegas did not three putt, one-putting 27 of the last 44 holes. This victory took him to a career high of 18th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Villegas followed his BMW Championship win with a victory in equally prestigious Tour Championship on the PGA Tour. He beat Sergio García in a playoff, having trailed by 5 shots going into the final round. The win took Villegas to #7 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Camilo Villegas Tournament History
2008 The Open Championship |
17-20 July - The Open Championship - Royal Birkdale. The 137th Open Championship was successfully defended by Padraig Harrington. He shot -4 on the back 9 on the Sunday to pull away from Ian Poulter and overnight leader Greg Norman. The Open this year was without one notable absentee as World #1 Tiger Woods was recovering from knee surgery. Greg Norman became the oldest golfer ever to hold at least a share of the 54-hole lead when he led by 2 strokes on +2. Due to extremely high winds, no one managed to play under par for the round, and it was first time since 1986 when the 54-hole leader was not under par. Despite a wrist injury that almost forced him to withdraw prior to the tournament Harrington pulled away from the field with a tremendous back 9 and became only the fifth golfer to retain the Open Championship in the last 50 years. |
In Camilo Villegas's bag...After a staggering 65 in the second round, Camilo could not sustain this form into the weekend, eventually finishing in a tie for 39th after rounds of 79 and 76 over the weekend. Camilo Villegas shot the best round of the week by 2 shots at the 2008 Open Championship. Our picture was taken during his second round 65. At the top of his bag was a Cobra L4V X Speed 9˚ driver that he used to average over 290 yards during 2008. Unlike many players currently on tour, Camilo chose to have 2 fairway woods, Cobra 2008 Speed LD #3 and #5, rather than a hybrid. Camilo had a different #3 iron to the rest of his set. He had a Cobra Carbon #3 iron and Cobra Pro CB irons (4-P). Camilo completed his set like many of the Tour pros with Titleist Vokey wedges in 54˚ and 58˚ and with a Scotty Cameron Circa 62' #6 putter.

2007 PODS Championship |
8-11 March - PODS Championship - Westin Innisbrook - Copperhead Course. Won by 1998 Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia with a 10 under par score of 274. This was Calcavecchia’s first Tour victory since the 2005 Bell Canadian – and his 13th win in total. The $954,000 first prize takes him over the $20m career earnings for his career. He finished at 10-under 274 – and had a bit of a let-off when Heath Slocum missed a 4-foot par putt on the final hole which would have taken him into the play-off. |
In Camilo Villegas's bag...In Camilo's bag at the PODS: a 8.5 degree Cobra Speed Pro S driver, Cobra X Speed 5 wood, Cobra Carbon CB irons, and Vokey Spin Milled wedges - 54 and 58 degrees.
