Titleist 975 J Driver

Titleist 975J. The Titleist 975J was seen in many Tour bags early in 2001. It has a very similar look to its wildly popular predecessor the 975D which Tiger Woods used to win his historic Grand Slam. Just slightly larger and with a different look to the face. Features a 312cc titanium head with a 3 beta titanium face insert. Larger head than the Titleist Titanium 975D but same great looks. It has a Higher Coefficient of Restitution (COR) for increased ball speed, higher launch angle and offers more forgiveness on off-centre hits than the 975D.

I like the look of this on the tee: I can't play with a 460cc driver as the huge appearance puts me off, but this looks good. Goes as well as anything else as well, provided you hit them out of the middle.

The club arrived in better order than I was expecting according to the ratings, so that was a pleasant surprise. However, it soon became clear how far driver technology has progressed in the last 6 or 7 years. Whilst the club was clearly good quality it seemed 'dead' compared to even a modestly priced modern driver. There seemed to be very little spring off the club face, and it was difficult to get any height. As a result distances were poor. I suspect it was more the head than the shaft that was to blame, but compared to the Callaway FTi driver (with similar loft) that I have just bought, it is in another class. The Titleist hits on average about 40 yards less, and with much less acuracy. So, it was interesting to try an older driver, and perhaps it just needs a better player to get more out of it, but my advise to anyone with a high handicap looking for a driver is to spend a bit more and buy something up to date.

Played a lot of golf as a junior but preferred to carry a 5 or 3 wood. Recently returned to Golf and purchased the driver I had demo'd when younger but never purchased. Fantastic choice! As good as I remembered. Great strike and shaft plus fantastic weight and balance to the head. Highly recommended for any golfer!
