Ian Woosnam has criticised Yonex golfer Colin Montgomerie for the confusion surrounding Jose Maria Olazabal''s role in the 2010 Ryder Cup side.
Montgomerie recently announced that Olazabal had agreed to be his vice captain at Celtic Manor, only for the Spaniard to deny the claims and reiterate his desire to qualify for the team as a player.
Woosnam, who captained Europe to a famous Ryder Cup victory at The K Club in 2006, questioned the new skipper''s decision to go public with his plans for Olazabal.
"Colin should have asked Jose before he said anything," the Welshman told BBC Sport.
"You don''t want to upset your players straightaway and Jose is a good enough player to still make it on the team."
Sam Torrance, Europe''s victorious Ryder Cup captain in 2002, has also suggested that Montgomerie will need to look for a different right-hand man.
"You have to understand Ollie has done his stint as vice captain and
he doesn''t want to be the second-in-command anymore," Torrance said in Portugal last week.
Olazabal took the role of vice captain to Nick Faldo for last year''s Ryder Cup defeat at Valhalla.
