Westwood in front as wind halts play in Houston

Ping golfer Lee Westwood managed to establish a two-stroke lead before play was suspended during the first round of the Shell Houston Open yesterday (April 2nd).

With thunderstorms delaying the start of the PGA Tour event at Redstone Golf Club, high winds then forced the players off the course midway through the afternoon.

Westwood carded five birdies to reach four under par after nine holes, while a group of eight players including Justin Leonard, JB Holmes and Charlie Wi were two under.

The Englishman''s impressive performance included two 18-foot birdie putts on the first two holes and another one from 45 feet at the par-three ninth.

Westwood finished third on the European Tour''s Order of Merit last season but is without a victory since 2007. He has not won on the PGA Tour since 1998.

Eight of the world''s top ten players are in the field at Redstone, with play scheduled to resume at 08:00 local time today.
