Mickelson regrets "missed opportunity"

Callaway golfer Phil Mickelson has admitted his failure to capitalise on the injury to Tiger Woods by winning a Major tournament this year.

Looking back on his 2008 season, the 38-year-old American described it as "a consistent year", but acknowledged that Wilson player Padraig Harrington enjoyed far greater success in stepping into the world number one''s shoes.

With Woods sidelined after undergoing knee surgery in June, Harrington won both the remaining Majors, while Mickelson tied for 19th at the Open in July and finished joint-seventh at the US PGA Championship the following month.

"As far as a missed opportunity, certainly Padraig took advantage of the opportunity … That''s what I was hoping to do," he told Reuters.

"This year I actually struck the ball quite well in every Major, but I did not putt anywhere near as well so I''ve been addressing that."

Mickelson is now without a Major victory since April 2006, when he won his second Masters title.

He has also lost his position as world number two, with Sergio Garcia usurping the left-hander in the rankings earlier this month.
