Els moves in front at Singapore Open

Two birdies on his final three holes saw Callaway golfer Ernie Els move to the top of the Singapore Open leaderboard this morning.

The South African was forced to abandon his opening round with four holes left to play due to bad light yesterday, but returned at daybreak to card a five-under-par 66 at Sentosa Island''s Serapong Course.

Els'' score put him on stroke ahead of local player Lam Chih Bing, who shot a four-under 67 to claim the clubhouse lead yesterday.

"It''s not an easy course. If you miss shots, you''ll pay the price. I felt comfortable with the swing and I''m pretty pleased with the start," Els told reporters afterwards.

The Big Easy appears to have found some form after implementing a number of changes to salvage a disappointing season – he has switched his base from Wentworth to Florida, changed caddies and enlisted the services of Butch Harmon as his coach.

With a purse of $5 million (£3.4 million) and $792,500 going to the winner, the Singapore Open is the richest national tournament in Asia.
