Lawrie gets approval for golf resort

The Scottish government has approved Paul Lawrie''s plan for a £115 million golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

In collaboration with developer Muir Group, the 1999 Open champion hopes to build a new course on the site of the former Blairs Seminary at Banchory-Devenick.

The golf resort, which also received unanimous approval from the Aberdeenshire council, is expected to create 1,000 new jobs in the region.

Lawrie said: "To be part of a development which will provide my local community with access to an international championship golf course … is a day I cannot wait to see."

The Aberdeen-born player added that the resort, in conjunction with Donald Trump''s new golf development, will help north-east Scotland to become "one of the world''s top golfing destinations".

Earlier this week, Mr Trump was controversially given the go-ahead for a £1 billion golf complex on the Aberdeenshire coast near Balmedie.
