Valderrama 'could get new tournament'

Plans to hold a new golf tournament at Valderrama next year are already underway, it has emerged.

The famous Spanish course staged the Volvo Masters for the final time last week, with the European Tour''s season-closing event due to take place in Dubai from 2009.

However, a new sponsor is planning to put on an event at Valderrama in October 2009, during the week which would traditionally have been devoted to the Volvo Masters.

According to the Times, the unidentified sponsor is prepared to offer $5 million (£3.1 million) in prize money for a limited-field stroke play event running from October 29th to November 1st.

Commenting on the developments, a source at the club said: "We have to move fast to bring all this off. Time is pressing."

Mizuno golfer Soren Kjeldsen won the final Volvo Masters at Valderrama on Sunday (November 2nd), finishing two strokes ahead of Martin Kaymer and Anthony Wall with an eight-under-par 276.
