D A Weibring finally won the first Major of his career when he held off competition from a star-studded field to claim the Senior Players Championship on Sunday.
The 55-year-old enjoyed a long career on the PGA Tour and won a number of tournaments, but never managed better than third in a Major.
It was a similar story on the Champions Tour until the weekend when he managed a four-round score of nine under at Baltimore Country Club.
That was good enough for Weibring to hold off the challenge of Jeld-Wen Tradition champion Fred Funk and claim a one-shot victory.
Weibring admitted he had enjoyed some good fortune during his two-under-par final round, but insisted that would not detract from his enjoyment of his biggest win.
"I didn''t play my best golf. I''ve played better in the final round and haven''t been rewarded. It was just my time, and I''m very proud to have won," he said.
The top ten also featured Major winners Ben Crenshaw, Sonartec golfer Nick Price and Bernhard Langer. |
