Nike golfer Charl Schwartzel shot a final round of 66 to secure the 166,660 (£132,000) first prize at the Madrid Masters on Sunday.
The South African began the fourth day at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid with a one-shot lead and played controlled golf to extend the advantage to three by the end of the event.
Argentina''s Ricardo Gonzalez was unable to match his playing partner''s scoring but his 68 was good enough to clinch second.
Schwartzel, who climbed to 24th in the European Tour Order of Merit, subsequently revealed he had played well in Madrid despite being hampered by illness and a shoulder injury.
"I thought I grinded it out nicely all week. I just managed to keep it going," the 24-year-old added.
Pablo Larrazabal finished third after adding a 67 to his third round of 62, while Alvaro Quiros and Robert Rock shot 64s to share fourth position. |
