TaylorMade professional Paul Broadhurst shot a 67 to finish day one of the Madrid Masters in a three-way tie for the lead.
The Englishman''s four-under-par round was matched by Sweden''s Magnus A Carlsson and Australia''s Marcus Fraser.
Afterwards Broadhurst, who is without a tournament victory since 2006, admitted he had scored well despite not being at the top of his game.
"I just stuck in there really and had to make a couple of miracle shots to keep it ticking over," the 43-year-old said.
Broadhurst may need to improve over the next few days if he is to remain in contention for the title, as a serious Spanish challenge is close behind.
Pablo Larrazabal and Santiago Luna are part of a five-man group a shot off the lead, while Carlos del Moral, Ping golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jose Manuel Lara, Francis Valera and Ignacio Garrido all finished under par.
They were joined by two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal, who shot a 70 on his return from an injury layoff. |
