Credit crunch could hit PGA Tour, warns Els

Economic circumstances could force golfers on the PGA Tour to rethink their schedules next season, Callaway golfer Ernie Els has claimed.

During a press conference at St Andrews yesterday, the South African suggested that the global credit crunch has put increasing pressure on golf''s leading sponsors, particularly in the US.

Els said that some players may alter their plans if major changes are made to the PGA Tour in 2009.

"There are some big questions there with the US economy," the 38-year-old stated.

"I would think that some of the financial and motor companies might be in a bit of stress."

Els is in Scotland for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which begins today at the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

The three-time Major winner also told reporters of his desire to triumph at the Dunhill Links, having twice finished second at the event in recent years.
