Ping golfer Lee Westwood narrowly missed out on a successful defence of his British Masters title yesterday, with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano winning the tournament in a playoff.
An inspired final round of 67 saw the Spaniard finish level with Westwood on 12 under par at The Belfry.
The two men played the 18th hole three times before they could be separated, but Fernandez-Castano eventually triumphed when he produced a ten-foot putt and Westwood missed.
A member of the European Ryder Cup team beaten in Kentucky, the 35-year-old Englishman admitted afterwards that he had been tiring as the tournament reached its conclusion.
"I felt I am at the end of my tether and running on empty," he told BBC Sport.
Fernandez-Castano now has four European Tour victories and a perfect playoff record of played three, won three.
New Zealander Michael Campbell took third place at The Belfry on ten under par, while Sweden''s Mikail Lundberg closed with a 70 to finish eight under in fourth.
