Woosnam and Lyle state Ryder Cup claims

Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle have both put themselves in the frame to captain Europe at the 2010 Ryder Cup.

With the competition taking place at Celtic Manor in Wales, it has been suggested that 2006 skipper Woosnam should be given the chance to resume captain''s duties in his home country.

Speaking to BBC Sport yesterday, the 50-year-old said: "If the players and committee wanted me to come back it would be nice to do it in Wales."

However, Scotsman Lyle is also emerging as a strong candidate, with his bid for the captaincy endorsed by Ryder Cup veteran Colin Montgomerie earlier this week.

"It''s an opportunity which only comes once in a lifetime to anybody, so the nice comments from Colin are inspiring," Lyle told Sky Sports yesterday.

Jose Maria Olazabal, who served as Nick Faldo''s vice captain at the Ryder Cup in Valhalla, has ruled himself out of the running to be skipper in 2010.

The 42-year-old Spaniard said he would prefer a chance to make the European side as a player.
