Lyle should be next captain, says Monty

Ryder Cup veteran Colin Montgomerie has backed Sandy Lyle to captain Europe in 2010.

The Yonex golfer failed to make Nick Faldo''s side for the recent defeat at Valhalla, despite appearing in eight consecutive Ryder Cups since 1991.

Looking ahead to Celtic Manor in two years'' time, Montgomerie described fellow Scotsman Lyle as an "outstanding candidate" for the captain''s role.

"Sandy''s time is around now and he hasn''t done it before so you''d have to put him as favourite," he told BBC Radio Five Live yesterday.

Now 50, Lyle is the only one of the ''Big Five'' European golfers of the 1980s who has not yet captained the Ryder Cup team.

Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam have now all served as Europe''s skipper in the transatlantic showdown.

Welshman Woosnam, who led Europe to Ryder Cup glory at The K Club in 2006, has also been strongly tipped for the captaincy in 2010, as the competition is being held in his home country.
