Wood looks back on Open success

Chris Wood has described his experience at The Open Championship in July as "the best week of my life".

The 20-year-old unknown from Bristol tied for fifth at Royal Birkdale, emulating Justin Rose''s famous performance as an amateur at the same course ten years ago.

Turning professional the following week, Wood made his European Tour debut at the SAS Masters in Sweden and finished a respectable 18th.

In an interview with the Independent, the 6ft 5in golfer looked back fondly on his Open display.

Wood said: "I tried to play one shot at a time, which is obviously hard to do. I was just looking at leaderboards and enjoying it."

He also described playing with Cobra golfer Ian Poulter as "amazing" and said he was "so pleased" to see the 32-year-old clinch second place at Royal Birkdale behind Wilson''s Padraig Harrington.

Following the SAS Masters, Wood missed the cut at the KLM Open after being penalised for a wrong drop. He also recorded a 52nd-place finish in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles last month.
