BMW Championship suffers first-round washout

The opening round of the BMW Championship was postponed yesterday after heavy storms left part of the course at Bellerive Country Club underwater.

With the remnants of Hurricane Gustav arriving in St Louis, three inches of rain fell on the course yesterday morning and officials were forced to reschedule the first round for Friday.

As the field for the third FedEx Cup playoff consists of just 69 players, the organisers have announced that 36 holes will be played on Saturday to put the event back on schedule.

Cleveland golfer Vijay Singh has an almost unassailable lead in the standings after victory at the previous two playoffs – he won The Barclays in New Jersey and beat TaylorMade''s Mike Weir by five strokes to clinch the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Norton in Massachusetts last week.

The top 30 players after this week''s event in St Louis will proceed to the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, which begins on September 22nd.
