Clarke defends Poulter over Cup selection

Darren Clarke has said that he bears no ill feeling towards Cobra golfer Ian Poulter over his own failure to make the Ryder Cup team.

European captain Nick Faldo sparked a major controversy in the golf world by choosing Poulter ahead of Clarke for this month''s event at Valhalla, but the Northern Irishman has called for an end to the debate.

Although disappointed to miss out on the Ryder Cup, Clarke said that ''Poults'' deserves a place in the side, despite his questionable decision not to take part in the final qualifying event at Gleneagles last week.

The 40-year-old said: "I feel for Poults. He''s been given a lot of stick through no fault of his own.

"He''s a great player, he''s 24th in the world."

Faldo decided to make Poulter and Nike golfer Paul Casey his wildcard picks for the biennial team competition, ignoring the claims of Clarke and fellow veteran Colin Montgomerie.

Perhaps best remembered for his heroic performance at The K Club in 2006, Clarke has featured in the last five European Ryder Cup sides.
