Faldo opts for Poulter and Casey

Nick Faldo completed his European Ryder Cup team in typically controversial fashion yesterday by handing wildcards to Cobra golfer Ian Poulter and Nike''s Paul Casey.

Earning their second and third caps respectively, the pair have been chosen ahead of Cup veterans Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke, with Faldo surprising many people with his exclusion of the latter.

The wildcard picks were announced after the Johnnie Walker Championship at Glenagles, where Justin Rose, Soren Hansen and Oliver Wilson secured the final three automatic qualifying places.

Explaining his choices, Faldo described Poulter as a "very determined guy" and praised his performance at the Open in July, when he finished as runner-up to Padraig Harrington.

"I love his attitude and what he did at the Open - that back nine he played with the intention to win and had that emotional feeling," the captain said.

Faldo''s 12 players will take on the US side at Kentucky''s Valhalla course from September 19th.
