Clarke deserves Ryder Cup place, says Harrington

Padraig Harrington has backed Darren Clarke to make the European Ryder Cup team as a wildcard entrant.

Having already secured his place in the side, the world number three produced a litany of reasons as to why captain Nick Faldo should pick Clarke for next month''s showdown at Valhalla.

Harrington claimed that the Northern Irishman has hit form at the perfect time, would bring valuable experience to the team and is "a natural partner to Lee Westwood".

Speaking during practice for the Deutsche Bank Championship yesterday, the Dubliner stated: "I don''t see how you couldn''t pick Clarke.

"Darren carries stature into the Ryder Cup, which is very important."

Clarke boosted his chances of receiving a wildcard with victory at the KLM Open in Holland last week - his second title of the year.

The 40-year-old from Dungannon has played on five previous Ryder Cup teams, winning four times.
