A five-under-par first round saw Frenchman Gregory Havret top the leaderboard on day one of the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland.
Havret''s 68, which featured six birdies and one bogey, put him two shots ahead of compatriot Christian Cevaer, Scotland''s Gary Orr and Englishmen Paul Broadhurst and Robert Rock.
A group of seven players, including Danish Ryder Cup hopeful Soren Hansen and Welshman Bradley Dredge, finished a further stroke behind on two under at Gleneagles.
Darren Clarke had the best round of the men hoping for a wildcard entry to Nick Faldo''s Ryder Cup team, carding a 72 to finish one under par, while Yonex golfer Colin Montgomerie was one over.
Paul McGinley is also hoping to impress Faldo at the Perthshire course this week, but he slipped down the field with a three-over 76, alongside Titleist''s Martin Kaymer and Callaway golfer Oliver Wilson.
Havret won the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond last year, when the player from Aix-en-Provence beat Callaway''s Phil Mickelson in a playoff.
