Harrington questions LPGA language exam

Wilson golfer Padraig Harrington expressed surprise after being informed of the LPGA Tour''s plan to test members on their English speaking skills.

Speaking in Massachusetts ahead of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the world number three described the controversial proposal as "an amazing statement".

Harrington said that the examination system could be difficult to enforce and suggested that the LPGA will face a host of problems in trying to coerce players into learning English.

"Who draws the line about how many words you''ve got to know in English?" the Irishman asked.

"Some people are natural talkers and some people aren''t … There are people out there who don''t naturally pick up second languages," he added.

Harrington won the US PGA Championship to clinch his third Major victory earlier this month, having successfully defended his Open title at Royal Birkdale in July.

With his place on the European Ryder Cup team already secure, he takes part in the second FedEx Cup playoff event at TPC Boston this week.
