Azinger 'struggling for quality'

Paul Azinger faces a thankless task in choosing four wildcards for the US Ryder Cup team, it has been claimed.

In his column for ESPN.com, golf writer Bob Harig states that the American captain is desperate for players who have shown "hot" form in recent weeks, but will be forced to choose from a selection of "lukewarm" golfers.

With Ireland''s Padraig Harrington winning the last two Majors, Tiger Woods is the only US player to clinch a Major victory this year.

The world number one is of course injured for next month''s Ryder Cup, but Azinger''s problems run deeper than that, Harig suggests.

He notes that, after the eight automatic qualifiers, the next ten players in the US points list have just ten top-ten finishes between them since the US Open in June.

In addition, three of those players - Zach Johnson, JB Holmes and Jeff Quinney - have failed to register a top-ten place during that time, while only four of them made the cut at The Barclays tournament last week.

Azinger is due to announce his selections on September 2nd, following this week''s Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Massachusetts.
