A remote Scottish course described as the "Holy Grail" of links golf is set to reopen today following a three-year restoration project.
Situated on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Askernish Golf Club was designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris in 1891, but has been out of use for decades, the Scotsman reports.
A team led by golf consultant Gordon Irvine and course architect Martin Ebert began restoring the venue in 2005 and are now ready to unveil the finished course, with Scottish football hero Kenny Dalglish set to preside over the official opening.
Mr Ebert, who has worked on 60 courses around the world, described Askernish as "a living museum of golf".
He told the newspaper: "The first few days, looking at the land [and] seeing where the holes should be, were probably the most enjoyable I''ve had in my career."
Born in St Andrews, Old Tom Morris was an early pioneer of professional golf and is credited with standardising course length at 18 holes, among other innovations.
