Callaway golfer Phil Mickelson believes that a good showing in the FedEx Cup playoffs will make up for a series of disappointing performances in this season''s Majors.
The world number two tied for seventh at the US PGA Championship earlier this month but has frequently struggled on the big stage recently, despite the absence of arch rival Tiger Woods.
However, with the playoffs starting at the Barclays Classic in New Jersey today, Mickelson suggested that he will target FedEx Cup success as a way of salvaging his season.
"I think that The Players Championship and the FedEx Cup have enough credibility to offset a season if you were to do well in those events and not win a Major," the 38-year-old said.
The top 144 players from the PGA Tour money list will tee off at Ridgewood Country Club for the Barclays, with that field gradually reduced to 30 for the final event - next month''s Tour Championship.
Mickelson''s last Major victory came at the Masters in 2006.
