Harrington's success 'based on fear'

Wilson golfer Padraig Harrington has again suggested that a lack of confidence on the golf course has helped him to become one of the world''s top players.

The 36-year-old Irishman now has three Major titles to his name, including back-to-back wins at The Open Championship and US PGA Championship this year, but said this week that his best form is often "motivated by fear".

Speaking in New Jersey ahead of the first FedEx Cup playoff event, Harrington explained that worrying about his performance usually helps him to produce the best shots, particularly when putting.

"Generally, when I play my best golf I stand over every shot worrying about where I''m going to miss it," he commented.

"When I do get focused, I do hole putts … I do need to have that bit of intensity to do it."

Harrington is now ranked number three in the world and is expected to be one of the stars of the European team at next month''s Ryder Cup.

The Dubliner will play the Barclays Classic at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus this week.
