Donald facing three-month layoff

Luke Donald has confirmed his absence from the Ryder Cup next month after deciding to go ahead with surgery on his injured wrist.

The Mizuno golfer was holding slim hopes of making Nick Faldo''s team for the event, but will be sidelined for about three months following the operation with US specialist Dr Andrew Weiland this week.

Donald picked up the tendon injury at the US Open in June and initially opted to see whether his wrist would recover without the need for surgery. He has not played since the tournament at Torrey Pines, where he withdrew during the final round.

"While there is never a good time for an injury, the timing of this injury was especially disappointing for me considering that it forced me to miss the Open Championship and it comes in a Ryder Cup year," the 30-year-old said.

Donald has represented Europe in two Ryder Cups, losing just once in seven matches at the biennial competition.

In his absence, Cobra golfer Ian Poulter and Nike''s Paul Casey appear the most likely to receive wildcards for the event, with Faldo due to finalise his side in three weeks'' time.
