Padraig Harrington has been named the European Tour''s Golfer of the Month for July following his Open triumph at Royal Birkdale.
The Wilson player was the clear favourite for the accolade after he became the first European to retain the Claret Jug since Scotsman James Braid in 1906.
Indeed, only three players have managed to defend Major titles in the last 20 years, putting Harrington in the illustrious company of Curtis Strange, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
"In a month of outstanding performances, it needed something exceptional to win the award and Padraig duly delivered," said panel member and Daily Mail golf correspondent Derek Lawrenson.
The panel also commended players such as Graeme McDowell, Ross Fisher and Jeev Milkha Singh for their performances during July.
Harrington won the 2007 Open at Carnoustie and claimed his second title in difficult conditions at Royal Birkdale last month, finishing four strokes ahead of Cobra golfer Ian Poulter.
The 36-year-old Irishman is now ranked number three in the world and is likely to play a key role for Europe at next month''s Ryder Cup.
