Ping golfer Hunter Mahan has apologised for his controversial attack on the Ryder Cup.
The 26-year-old American is yet to take part in the biennial event, but shocked the golf world last week by claiming that US team members are treated like "slaves" by the PGA, which views the competition as a "money-maker like no other".
Mahan has since met with PGA officials Brian Whitcomb and Joe Steranka to explain his comments, as well as telephoning US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger to apologise, Golf.com reports.
"I deserve what I get. I take full responsibility for what I said," the Californian stated.
Mahan joined the PGA Tour in 2004 and claimed his first victory at the Travelers Championship last year.
He is currently outside the automatic qualifying spots for the Ryder Cup but remains a possible wildcard pick, as Azinger is thought to have accepted his apology and said that he would not "hold a grudge" over the incident.
