Singh holds on for victory in Ohio

Cleveland golfer Vijay Singh won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after shooting a final round of 68 yesterday.

The Fijian finished the tournament at Firestone Country Club on ten under par – one shot in front of Ping golfer Lee Westwood and Australian Stuart Appleby.

Early leader Retief Goosen took a share of fourth place on eight under par, with the Taylormade player finishing alongside Callaway''s Phil Mickelson, who enjoyed a single-shot lead at one stage but bogeyed three of the last four holes.

Singh struggled with his putting throughout the fourth round in Ohio but held on to secure his first win on the PGA Tour since March 2007.

"I was kind of sweating out there. I just had to be comfortable over it. Towards the end, it got kind of shaky," the former world number one said afterwards.

The victory could see Singh move back up to number four in the world rankings, having slipped down to 15 during his recent win drought.

A final round of 67 saw Darren Clarke boost his chances of making Nick Faldo''s Ryder Cup team. The Northern Irishman finished tied for sixth on seven under par.
