Jeff Overton hit a seven-under-par 65 to take the lead on the first day of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open yesterday.
With 47 of the world''s top 50 golfers taking part in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this week, the Nevada event will offer the chance for some of the PGA Tour''s less-established players to make a name for themselves.
Overton, a 25-year-old American, is currently two shots ahead of a group of four players on five under par at Montreux Golf and Country Club, including England''s Brian Davis.
Michelle Wie, whose decision to play in the tournament drew criticism from her female peers earlier this week, recovered from a bogey on the first hole to hit a one-over-par 73.
That score gives the 18-year-old Hawaiian a fair chance of making the cut in a PGA Tour event for the first time in eight attempts.
Swedish LPGA players Annika Sorenstam and Helen Alfredsson recently questioned Wie''s desire to compete against men, with Alfredsson stating that she should "concentrate on being on the women''s tour and learning to win".
